University College London -  Online Science Mentoring program

Inspire Aspire is very proud to have established a regular mentoring program with Highams Park Science Department and the Engineering Sciences Department, University College London.

Seven, year 9 students have been selected this year to participate in our pilot program.   Since January 2020, they have met with their mentors Liz, Aditi, Zarin and Nicola on a weekly basis for support with their in-class learning but also have the wonderful opportunity to discuss a range of engaging scientific topics including:

  • Tissue engineering,
  • Summations of infinite series
  • Viewpoints on the inside of a black hole
  • General discussions of the various fields and careers in Engineering
  • The Golden ratio
  • Pythagoras' theorem
  • Arc length of a circle
  • Genetics
  • STEM careers
  • Koch Snowflake fractal

We are so grateful for the enthusiasm that the mentors bring to the sessions and hope that it will build confidence, enjoyment and achievement in our selected students.

We are also extremely thankful to have been afforded the  opportunity to continue offering free mentoring (albeit remotely) during the  lockdown to a 'trial group' of 19 students from years 9-12.  We thank UCL and all their wonderful mentors for this opportunity and hope to  develop our relationship with such a prestigious higher learning institution further by expanding out to support more students in the future.
