Lisa Jobber, Family Nurse (NELFT NHS Foundation Trust) - Inspire Aspire Talk 12 Mar 19

Lisa Jobber, Family Nurse (NELFT NHS Foundation Trust)came in to run a talk/Q&A session with our year 12 Health and Social care students.

Some of the points discussed included:

  • Her previous experience of working in an old people’s home, an adult nurse in a Leicestershire hospital, followed by working as a school nurse for 5 years to her current role as a Community Family nurse supporting young mothers with babies (up to the age of 2). Lisa’s used own story of being pregnant at 21, failing her G.C.S.E’s then later retraining as a mature student and achieving a degree in nursing to motivate our students to both enjoy, work hard and achieve success.
  • Lisa’s current role which involves focusing on teenage sexual health and advocating contraception to young mums with babies so that they have enough time to bond with their first child.
  • Identification of some of  the difficulties of working with young clients who have difficult home backgrounds (from gangs to drug issues) and the need to offer relevant support to them and their babies (including referring on to other parties such as social workers where necessary). This tied in to a discussion/identification of some of the core qualities of working as a nurse: flexibility with relationships with clients; being honest, showing integrity and building trust and resilience while not getting too emotionally involved.

Our Health and Social Care students were also engaged in discussion with Lisa about:

  • The use of leeches and maggots for medicinal purposes!
  • Opportunities in nursing and the variety of careers available– from orthopedics to specialist jobs created by NHS related for talented individuals working in Pupil Referral Units and Youth offending teams.

Students also asked a range of questions relating to becoming a nurse; midwifery to changing over nursing specialisms.

We are very thankful for the time which Lisa  gave to our students to both answer their questions and motivate them to achieve their full potential in their chosen career paths.
