Can we engineer our way out of the climate crisis? Academic Seminar 24 Nov 2021

Fourteen 6th Formers and Year 11s attended our academic seminar on the climate crisis. Part of the 6th Form series of academic seminars, helping to prepare students for interviews it led to a wide ranging discussions on many aspects of the topic.

We ran over by 15 mins and Digby still had more to grill Mr Hyde with!

We started with the intentionally controversial suggestion:

"You would do more to avert the climate crisis by gluing your face to a road, than going to university to study engineering."

Happily, the prospective engineering students leapt to the defence of their chosen subject and we covered many aspects of the debate such as:

  • whether geo-engineering or nuclear fusion can be "silver bullets" to solve the climate crisis
  • the success of science and engineering to date to come up with viable solutions
  • the need for continued engineering progress especially in battery development for electric cars and energy storage
  • the role of governments and companies in putting the current solutions we have into practice
  • the role of climate protest and individual action

Many thanks to all those who attended. If you are interested in developing these ideas and seeing what we can do at Highams Park then explore our Earthshot Prize pages and join Ms Davey's Make A Change group who meet on a Thursday after school in W12.
