Year  7 Waltham Forest Football Tournament - Goals

Last Friday, Mr Abberley took 14 year 7 boys to the Waltham forest year 7 football tournament at goals.

It was a miserably rainy day but the boys were in great spirits and very excited to play.

As we arrived, it was speculated by other teachers that we were the hot favourites (this I didn’t like as it adds pressure) but we played it down and went about our business.

We entered two teams as an A and a B team.

The A team didn’t get off to a good start, losing to Heathcote 4-1, who we had beaten 4-2 in the regular league season quite comfortably.

The B’s lost their first game too.

After 3 or 4 games, it was evident the B’s were playing better and had a good run of form, as they had 2 wins and 2 losses.

The A’s had played against a few softer teams and picked up two solid wins, scoring 7 in one game and 5 in another.

By game 7, both teams were relying on the next two games results to see if they qualified for the quarter finals.

Game 7…Highams park A vs Highams Park B…it was ON!!

The A’s nonchalantly danced onto the pitch in the expectation that it was in the bag…the B’s had another plan.

1…2…3…4…5…6… goals went in and it was the A’s who were reeling with frustration as the B’s took the game by the scruff to get the win.

The twist was yet to follow.

As both teams were waiting on other results, they were unsure as to whether or not they had gone through. The suspense was intense.

Mr Abberley approached the organiser with anticipation and excitement, yet returned full of sorrow.

It had worked out that because the B’s beat the A’s, they had knocked them out, but because they didn’t have enough wins themselves, did not qualify either. It was a bitter end to a wonderful afternoon.

The boys enjoyed themselves and had a great day.

Well done for playing with a great attitude and for representing our school with pride and skill.

I was very proud.

Mr Abberley
