Academic Seminar Series November 2022

Our Academic Seminar series for Year 13 continued on Wed 16 Nov.

Students took part in a fantastic discussion about the sustainability of the planned new school buildings.

Digby, Jasmine, Stanley and Bareerah all contributed to a wide ranging debate drawing on facts and figures from a number of articles provided by Mr Barker in advance. Whilst not necessarily a topic they will have to discuss in interviews for their chosen subjects, they were certainly tested on their quick thinking and ability to back up opinions with facts and logic.

We discussed:

  • the pros and cons of demolition and rebuild versus refurbishment
  • long term and short termism in relation to climate tipping points
  • the possibility of reusing and recycling elements and materials from the current buildings
  • the plastic bag surcharge and whether laws are an effective means of driving change
  • whether we can measure the benefits of new buildings to people vs the cost to the climate and environment
  • the limits of logic!
  • useful tips like having notes to use in interviews and discussions (especially if hey are online!)
  • and much, much more...

Thanks to all students involved for their ideas and Dr Moore and Mr Barker for organising the talk.

The ideas they came up with to improve the sustainability of the build will be shared with Senior Management and will hopefully become part of these students' legacy to the school!
