Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Awards 2020- 2021

Following the extended lockdown of Summer 2020 it was not surprising to see a healthy number of 50 year 9 students eagerly sign up to begin their D of E journey in September 2020.

Numbers swelled swiftly as another dozen participants joined the group, making it the largest D of E group we have ever had!

Throughout the first term they all embarked on their individual activities for skill, volunteering and physical. With many clubs and organisations still shut we had to find ways to complete all of the activities. Wednesday after school sport sessions were really well supported before and after lockdown. Many then continued physical activities at home by recording walks, runs and bike rides. Others had online classes from their clubs or joined in with other online activities. The determination, resourcefulness and desire to achieve has been tremendous.

The range and quality of skills undertaken has been amazing with students submitting photos of cooking, photography and Art. Evidence of online Music and Drama has been equally impressive.
Volunteering opportunities have been particularly scarce this year, however over 20 have contributed to the D of E cookbook we have produced which is being sold for charity. Others have helped siblings with home learning and some have played vital roles in supporting the much needed food hubs during the pandemic. One student was even delivering on Christmas Eve.
Finally the expedition.

After much uncertainty it became clear that we would be able to complete a full expedition, however with only 8 weeks to plan and prepare we had to move fast…
Fortunately, we were able to use some PE and Citizenship lessons to facilitate this.
All 61 students have now completed their 2 day totally self-sufficient expedition. They have all shown a great deal of flexibility and patience as groups were formed and reformed at short notice because of self-isolating participants.

What was evident throughout was the outstanding teamwork, support for each other and the desire to achieve.

During the expeditions it was a real privilege to witness increased confidence, excellent leadership skills emerging and all 61 participants experiencing the sheer joy and thrill of accomplishing such a challenge individually and as part of a team.
