Health and Social Care Work Experience 2019

Health and Social Care

As part of the level 3 Health and Social Care programme students are required to undertake a minimum of 100 hours work experience/work shadowing/Volunteering in any health or social care setting.

Two students found work experience in a care home which are specialists in caring for people from all ages who suffer from dementia.

Siham Rafas and Jessica Boricci spent 3 weeks at the care home during which time they leant transferable skills that can be used for the future. Communicating with dementia patients can be very difficult at times so requires lots of patience and understanding. They also leant practical skills such as monitoring food and fluid in take and bowel movements with regular monitoring charts completed. Keeping records was a major area that needs to be completed so that all staff know what each patient has done, been given or requires.

They would say that the biggest skill that they learnt was patience and communication especially listening skills.

This experience will also be able to be included in any future job applications and their university application.

Both Jessica and Siham have been offered part-time jobs with the care home.

Jessica is to become the activities coordinator and will work over the summer and during her 2nd year of the course.

Siham will start work after the summer and support Jessica in her role.
